ui thing

the UI bug has bit me again. whenever i get back in game want to start
coding again, including redoing the UI i was working on. which means,
anyone got opinions on how this looks? granted a lot of stuff would be
changed, since i only roughly threw it up in photoshop.

(stupid img attributes dont work well in guildportal.. or i just dont know how to use them)

anyone got suggestions other than stuff i obviously would change (like filling in blank spots, redoing fonts, and such)

I like the minimalist look, but I'm concerned with playability. Blue square with a question mark does have a certain appeal though. Much like your signature.

Perhaps have a few artfully arranged blue question squares arranged along one side, with a small viewport tucked away in the corner as a bold statement of nonconformity.

We just see a little blue square with a ? in it. If we click on the square we get a page that says:

having my own webserver, lets see if geoshit works.

That works. It's nice, although hot hot pink isn't exactly a color I can stare at for an entire raid. I'm one for dark windows, so I'd try it out if it came to life maybe.

/em runs to make a toon name Bazaarwhore!

which pink are you talking about? the HP bar (would imagine its not the
fake chat text). it could just be a monitor issue, but it should be an
'easier to see red than straight dark red'. i might mess with some
values and A/B then to people.

and im also thinking of doing the huge HP bar as a single mod for
default UI (or whatever UI) for the target bar..? it should be pretty
accurate, but too big? or is it viable for a lot of classes?

Buff bar, maybe? Just wondering.

Might also want to make the viewport area square to cut down on lag and still have a seamless look to the UI. Then again I'm much more obsessed with lag or lack thereof than having a brushed metal UI.

Do you plan to leave the "Self HP" and "Target" labels in there, or do you plan to pick up the player's name and target's name there? If so, you may wish to leave more text space for long names, like Lord Dolijonijiarnimorinar (aka. Lord Bob).

good point, i havent played in a while (ehem, ) so some stuff like that isnt as obvious, but once i start coding it..

i wanted a more dynamic looking dashboard look but might just go to
blocks like the default unless i can find a good layout that will
accomodate the slants and such better.

RE: buff bar and lag..
there isnt a buff bar in yet, it would likely be transparent though, havent got there.

lag, it wont be any more laggy than the default UI, in fact, it should
be far less laggy as i plan on coding from scratch (or at LEAST going
line for line modifying the default one). so there wont be extra
components lagging up the UI.

and brushed metal, bah, its suppose to look more stone like, i dont
know it was just a quick texture render in PS, i might try reworking it
unless someone thinks it looks good as 'brushed metal'.

My UI has taken on an L shape to accomodate the viewport/lag and also because when raiding I need a 3rd chat window.

Only 3 chat windows? That's the minimum that I use, ever. One for player communication, one for game spam (spells, combat) and the rest to main chat. Mostly I use more than that. For Soc I have 5 windows, for Zin it's 4. One for stuff I can ignore totally if I don't have time to read it - guild chat, Alliance channel, Tem channel, emotes. Say, OOC, raid, group and shout are in one window. For Soc, Auction, flurry messages and rampage messages, temheals, and damage to me goes to one window. The usual spam window and main chat, which gets stuff like the results of / lfg that I need to see and not be buried under Soandso casts a spell stuff.

In any case I like the look of your UI, but I need more windows, and in the case of Soc, I have to keep them up on the side near the HP bars so that I can both read and watch HP at the same time. That's why I'm so glad that we *can* customize UI's in this game. For pet windows on yours, consider the horizontal pet bar that Shylah posted awhile back. I love that one, and use it on all my pet classes. Much nicer than the default as far as fitting it into UI layouts nicely while still being able to access the buttons easily.

Pia tank.  No read fast.  To many windows confuse Pia.

*   Garbage window for combat spam (need to see who may be hitting me and who I am hitting) - Top left corner
*   Raid window for Group/Raid/Guild/Tells/Important Channels - Centered
*   Catch-all window for everything else - Right of raid Window

If I could fit more windows onto my iMac and see the text without making my viewport into a cameraphone - I'd love to do it

with paz i always used just 2. when i boxed volo i think i used 2 but may have added a 3rd for self melee spam.

1 chat, which has all the chat channels
2 other, which has everything else

and filter out all melee spam (who would want it besides parsing) and
all spell spam (all but group, so i can tell when AE hits em), anything
else i dont need. i never missed anything either, and never turned a
channel off (like auction). then again, i never raided a cleric... so...

ill probably release a lot of options if i do it so you can mix and
match pieces. like have horizontal and normal pet bar, enormous and
regular HP gauges, take special requests. all that stuff isnt hard to
code, its like a few minutes to set up the window dimensions, then a
few more to place the pieces, then a few more to /loadskin.

but if anything it should work with viewport pretty well, even as it is
now youll just have some black above the HP bars (and not much black at
that) and you can still L shape the viewport and stack them on. hell i
could even do a straight one (like default) and a dashboard one (like
what im trying to do now).
