On EQPC, they've had linkbots for many years. You send a tell to
the bot, and it sends you back a link to the item named.
Unfortunately, even with access to the chat server so that we can reach
their linkbots, they're still useless to us. Our item database is
in a different format, so we can't use links from EQPC.

At long last, EQMac has its own linkbot! This is intended to be
an open resource for all the people of Al'Kabor, so please feel free to
spread information about this to your friends and guildmates.

The bot's name is Lewt. (I wanted to name it Prometheus, but got
too many complaints about the long name. /sigh) To use it,
you send a tell to it with an item name. For example:

quote:

;tell Lewt Fish Rolls

Note that because this is going through the chat server, you have to
use ;tell rather than /tell. However, since it's on Al'Kabor,
;tell Lewt is sufficient, so you don't have to do ;tell alkabor.Lewt.

Names are not case sensitive, so ";tell lewt fish rolls" will work just
as well. For now, there is no partial matching, so you have to
get the name exactly right. If there is more than one item with a
particular name, it will send you links to every item of that name.

A few caveats:

1) This is not a perfect system. It may not be up 24/7. I
haven't figured out how to detect from the client when it gets
disconnected from the game (on server restarts, etc.), for example, to
restart the connection. I will do my best to keep it available at
all times, but there may be downtime.

2) Not all items in the database are right. My database comes
from Lucy, which has the PC-side item list, where there have been name
changes, ID changes, etc. If you try to get a link for an item
that you think should exist, and you get either a non-functional link
or an "item not found", please let me know (by PM on EQMac or
temerity.org), and I will try to find the source of the problem.

3) Please don't flood the bot. It's perfectly capable of handling
ordinary traffic from our server, but malicious people might be able to
flood it, which would suck. If that happens, I'd have to take it
away, and I don't want to do that.

Feel free to post here or PM me if you have questions. Otherwise, enjoy the new resource!

Zorblak
