http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/chains.htm

I don't want to see the Al`Kabor one...

COLUMBUS, Ohio âââ‰â¬Å For the first time, sociologists have mapped the romantic and sexual relationships of an entire high school over 18 months, providing evidence that these adolescent networks may be structured differently than researchers previously thought.

James Moody

The results showed that, unlike many adult networks, there was no core group of very sexually active people at the high school. There were not many students who had many partners and who provided links to the rest of the community.

Instead, the romantic and sexual network at the school created long chains of connections that spread out through the community, with few places where students directly shared the same partners with each other. But they were indirectly linked, partner to partner to partner. One component of the network linked 288 students âââ‰â¬Å more than half of those who were romantically active at the school âââ‰â¬Å in one long chain. (See figure for a representation of the network.)

James Moody, co-author of the study and professor of sociology at Ohio State University, said this network could be compared to rural phone lines, running from a long main trunk line to individual houses. As a comparison, many adult sexual networks are more like an airline hub system where many points are connected to a small number of hubs.

"We went into this study believing we would find a core model, with a small group of people who are sexually active," Moody said. "We were surprised to find a very different kind of network."

The results have implications for designing policies to stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents, he said.

(... continues ...)

(EDIT) Heh. Well I've read the other articles linked off that one, and I have to say, at least as they're presented in sound-bite form, I'm fairly unimpressed in general with his ability to draw appropriate conclusions based on his own data. This one was good though, and I think he kept his conclusions within some reasonable limit as defined by the data he got.

--
What surprises me is that only one person had intercourse with 9 others, standing out from all the others. Average max would be 5 or 6. And there is only one bisexual among the students that were questioned. And no gay people. Wouldn't count this "statistic" real accurate on that matter.

Also, how many of these relationships are "boasts"?

Well you'd imagine *more* people with tons of partners if they were boasting (which is what the researchers expected based adult society.

Also, it was a rural (midwest?) high school. I wouldn't be surprised if the kids were very careful about announcing any sort of homosexual activity. There's one bi person there that I saw. on the far right, female.

--
Actually, I'm not sure that it it a map of sexual relations, rather one of romantic and sexual, so the lines do not necessarily represent a sexual congress.

I do count two bi- females, one bi- and one homosexual male, though.

Nikolai Lianfyrr,
We used to play a game like this at Uni...it was called Six Degrees of Saliva. Similar to the Kevin Bacon game or Six Degrees of Separation. Quite fun, haven't played it for quite some time.

Sorta like degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon. Except, well Kevin Bacon wasn't in our sci fi club. And the question wasn't so much what movie you were in with who...

I don't remember Zorblak's Josh Smith number =). Although it's "2" if you go by the "had your name on a lease with" rule.

--
